Good Morning “Your Fathers Children.” Today we are in Amos 2.
Jodi and I have a daughter, Kyli, and a son Dawson. As they grew, as we raised them we - began to see ourselves in them. Not only was Kyli, the spitting image of Jodi, and Dawson the spitting image of me… but they began to say the things we say and do the things we do. Think about it, it’s how babies learn. At least at first they learn by mimicking. When we witnessed craziness or misbehavior; at times we would even say, “Well she’s your daughter, or he’s your son.”
God is Perfect Justice. As such, His Character demands He deal with sin (Romans 6:23). As we get into Amos we see that He is about to bring His Wrath, in Justice upon Israel’s enemies, as well as Judah and Israel - His chosen. He may give us chance after chance to get it right, but eventually He will execute Justice. Someone has to pay the price (John 3:16, Romans 5:8).
I’ll warn you, Amos as a prophet of God, also has bad news. He is yet another prophet that God in His Grace used - to try to get the nations attention. So it’s hard. Again, never forget, all they had to do was turn back to Him.
Some of the events surrounding the recent release of the Epstein files, among other things - have been incredibly heavy on my heart. Now couple that with some of the prophecy in Joel 3, and now Amos which - actually refers to some of the same.
As I dug into Amos 2, I found myself once again shaking my head at how far Israel fell. How far we have fallen. How did we get here? Every now and then a passage or phrase hits me harder than the rest. Today I was hit with one such passage.
“…Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name.” Amos 2:7b NIV
Father and son… they learned it from those that came before them. They learned from those that modeled it for them… at least to some extent. They learned from their fathers. What a contrast to the clear expectation of God (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Isaiah 38:19).
Understand the father’s example can work both ways! We all ought follow the example of The Perfect Father… and His Son. Jesus speaks very clearly of His proper relationship with The Perfect Father (John 14:6-18).
Love you all! Dig in and live it out!
