Good Morning “Sinners Saved By Gods Sovereign Grace.” Today we are in Genesis 27.
Isaac and Rebekah’s family could be the model for the dysfunctional family. God made it clear. The older would serve the younger. Jacob was the chosen one, the one through which God would make a great nation. He would inherit The Promise. Esau despises his birthright - it comes with a double portion of blessing but also includes things he doesn’t value. He is a man that lives in the flesh. He doesn’t need Gods provision and blessing, he can hunt and provide for himself… or so he believes. Furthermore at the end of chapter 26, we see he goes against Gods instructions by marrying not one but two (without even cause) Hittite women from the land of Canaan. Thus he’s corrupted the family line - if it was to proceed through him.
One might look at this chapter and wonder how God could bless the deception of Rebekah and Jacob. Make no mistake, God is simply working through the sin of men to accomplish His previously revealed sovereign will. Chapter 27 is an awesome display of God’s sovereignty despite man’s sin.
Isaac got the ball rolling by apparently disregarding Gods word to Rebekah concerning Jacob, ignoring the despising and selling of the birthright by Esau, and apparently looking past the fleshly living of Esau all because he liked wild game. Or, perhaps it was just out of opposition to Rebekah’s favoritism of Jacob. Maybe Rebekah’s favoritism of Jacob was in response to Isaac’s favoritism of Esau. Or maybe because she KNEW Jacob was THE ONE per Gods word.
Each of the family members were absorbed in their own desires and motivations. All guilty of sin to some degree, but each moving in relationship to one another - with the sin Isaac at the center of it all.
Sovereign over it all, God is working within it to bring about His desires in keeping with His promises and eternal purposes
As we will soon see, everyone will pay a price for their sin. Yet, no one’s sin is capable of limiting Gods power and ability to fulfill His plan. Through their sin Jacob is now forced to flee to Laban’s protection… back to their homeland, where he will ultimately find a wife from their family line. God ultimately, through it all, still protecting the line of Jesus.
Dig in! Marvel at the sovereignty of our God! Love you all!
