Good Morning “Benefactors of Gods Grace.” Today we are in chapter 15.
Yesterday we read about warrior, conqueror Abram. More accurately it was our Warrior God who gave Abram the victory over the kings and made it possible for him to rescue Lot.
Chapter 15 opens with Abram apparently in fear after the war, because we see God putting his fear to rest. We can assume he’s in fear of retaliation from the kings he just conquered. After all, their armies were much, greater, much more powerful - Abram with only 318 men. This is a reasonable fear, apart from and almighty God.
“After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.””
Genesis 15:1 NIV
All through Scripture we’re told fear nothing accept God. More than 200 times were told not to fear. Remember however that Abram didn’t yet have all of those times to read in Scripture. He only had Gods promise.
Abram is advanced in age, past the point of having children, and his wife Sarai is barren. In verse 2 he’s asking a real question. Likely not out of doubt necessarily, but truly out of confusion, lack of understanding. “How can this be?”
God reiterates His promise to Abram by taking him outside his tent and having him look up and count the stars. What an incredible picture, God, there with Abram as he looks up at the night sky God created - covered in stars.
“Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” Genesis 15:6 NIV
This is the essence of the Gospel. Many have argued this is one of the most important passages in all of Scripture. Abram is not “made” righteous but righteousness is applied to him - powerful!
Abram still wondering how this will possibly all work together - asks how he can know he will truly inherit the land. God explains to Abram that he will not see this covenant fulfilled until a later date, after his death. We know this is fulfilled in the Millennial Kingdom. Rev. 20
God seals His Covenant with Blood. He instructs Abram to prepare 5 animals. 5 is the number of Grace in Scripture. Got appears in likely the same type of “pillar of fire” that we see later as He appears to the Nation of Israel. He passes between the animal halves as Abram watches on symbolizing a Covenant promise that will never be broken.
If you haven’t already, check it out for yourself. Dig in! Love you all!
