Good Morning “Covenant Keepers.” Today we are in Jeremiah 34.
“The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom for the slaves.” Jeremiah 34:8 NIV
A covenant is a big deal - never to be entered into lightly. Promises are promises, contracts are made to be broken, but a “covenant” is an agreement between both the parties involved and God. A covenant says I will hold up my end, no matter what - even if you don’t! Furthermore; a covenant calls upon God to hold each party accountable should they break their covenant. Marriage is a Covenant!
God made a covenant with Noah and all of humanity to never again destroy the earth by flood. He put the rainbow in the sky as a symbol (Genesis 6:18, 9:8-17).
God made a covenant with Abraham. The Abrahamic covenant promised to make Abraham a great nation with many descendants, to give his descendants land, and to bless all peoples on earth through him. This everlasting covenant and its fulfillment is seen as extending through Abraham's lineage to all who have faith, ultimately culminating in blessings for all nations through Jesus Christ (Genesis 12,15,17).
Several other covenants were made throughout Scripture: The Mosaic Covenant, when God gave Moses The Law (Exodus 19-24), the Davidic Covenant which promised someone from Davids line would always rule and The Eternal Kingdom - Jesus was coming, (2 Samuel 7) and the New Covenant. The New Covenant promised Forgiveness of sins and redemption through Jesus Christ for those that repent and turn to Him (Jeremiah 31, Matthew 26:26-29, Luke 22:17-20). The New Covenant through Jesus, doesn’t abolish the Old Covenants but instead provides the means to their fulfillment - Jesus!
God always holds up His side of His Covenants, it is outside His character to do anything other. Man however… well… we’ve been reading all about Israel and Judahs struggle to hold up their end. Read the rest of Jeremiah 34 - Zedekiah too made a covenant and had a problem holding up His end. Wrap your mind around Gods response. Get a taste of how serious God takes our covenants.
Love you all! Dig in!
