Good Morning “Desiring Discipline.” Today we are in Jeremiah 10.
Because of the tone of Isaiah and Jeremiah, we have been camping on Gods Holy Character that demands Justice - for some time now.
Jeremiah’s heart in today’s chapter blows my mind! He first brings a Word from The Lord noting the nations idolatry, and reminding them that God is ALL POWERFUL. He created it ALL. He controls it ALL. Weather patterns may help us predict the weather… but guess who controls the patterns? “When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.” Jeremiah 10:13 NIV
Is there anyone who should NOT fear The Lord? It’s a rhetorical question of course.
“No one is like you, Lord; you are great, and your name is mighty in power. Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.”
Jeremiah 10:6-7 NIV
Now… as Gods “Servant”, His “Messenger”, His “Prophet”… Jeremiah prays. Of course he prays right? But check out how he begins his prayer…
“Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps. Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure— not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.” Jeremiah 10:23-24 NIV
You God direct our steps… Now discipline me…
NO Jeremiah, DON’T pray that! Who else thinks this is crazy! If I’m honest that was my immediate heart reaction… and it’s NOT right!
Jeremiah has NO problem recognizing Gods incredible power. He even acknowledges “fear” of The Lord as a result - as we all should. But then, calling on The Same God to discipline him? Wow! I mean there are certain things I’ve learned not to pray for, like patience… and if I’m honest, discipline. I’m convicted!!! He’s not alone… we’ve seen similar prayers from Job (Job 31), and David (Psalm 141:5).
If we truly want to be more like Jesus (1 Peter 1:16), and we are truly seeking His Kingdom and Righteousness (Matt. 6:33)… then shouldn’t we want to be disciplined in that direction (Job 5:17, Proverbs 3:11-12, Hebrews 12:4-12)?
I know… we even hesitate to think or suggest such a thing, because God might “hear” us and act… ha ha. Maybe we SHOULD want Him to do just that?
Love you all! Dig in!
