Good Morning “Word Hiders.”
Today we are in Psalm 119.
Ok, how many of you read the whole thing this morning? Psalm 119 is not short… in fact with 176 verses it’s the longest chapter in Scripture. Why? Why does It go on and on? Consider this…
Psalm 119 is an acrostic poem. What is an acrostic poem? Let me give you an example:
J - Jesus name above all names.
E - Everlasting Strength
S - Son of God
U - Undefiled High Priest
S - Savior of the world
Psalm 119 is broken into 22 sections with 8 verses in each section. Each of the 22 sections represents a letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Some have said David, inspired by God, wrote it to help Hebrew children learn the alphabet. It’s true, we often use acrostics to help us learn, remember, and even memorize stuff. However; I imagine that as God inspired David, “The man after His own heart” He had in mind much deeper reasons than alphabet learning.
The central theme of the entire Psalm seems to be The Word of God as the essential piece to righteous living. God through David, credits Scripture and the memorization of It to staying on track. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that He mentions memorization in the midst of it. The Word of God, The Law was preserved through generations by memorization even before it was recorded on tablets. Hebrew children were expected to memorize the Torah - the first 5 books of The Old Testament. The power of memorization isn’t a new concept.
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalms 119:11 NIV
Consider the possibility that Psalm 119 is arranged into an acrostic poem to make it easy to memorize… ALL of it! Maybe God used the well known Hebrew alphabet so that His followers would not likely forget any of it.
Wow… so what’s it say anyway?Well, it stands to reason that if it was important enough for our God to inspire “The man after Gods own heart” to pen it in an easy to remember format - we should study it, know it, maybe even memorize it.
“How can a young person stay on the path to purity?” Psalm 119:9a
Better dig in and find out!
Love you all! Dig in!
