Good Morning “Lesson Learners.” Today we are in Nahum 2.
Through our studies we’ve seen both aspects of God on full display; His Wrath and His Grace and Mercy. Not long ago we finished the book of Jonah. Most know at least the basics of the story, which tell of Gods incredible heart for the lost. Jonah didn’t believe Nineveh “deserved God”, so he refused to go to them and give Gods Word. The boat, the storm, the tossing, near drowning and the big fish… you remember. In the end, Jonah told them of Gods impending wrath and His offered Grace. They repented, and God stayed His hand, and they were blessed.
So much so in fact that the city grew to an impenetrable metropolis… or so they thought!
Opponents used to argue that there was no way these stories actually happened. Then in the late 1800s, the deliberation was silenced. A pair of explorers named Layard and Rawlinson made excavations and discoveries that brought to life a “metropolis” so vast that no serious mind could doubt what Jonah and Nahum prophesied concerning Nineveh’s splendor and the destruction at the peak of its glory. Furthermore; the ancient Greek historian, Diodorus Siculus, describes Nineveh and her fall - down to the smallest detail. Nahum’s prophecy was true! Interestingly he also mentions that Nineveh was warned by Nahum of Gods impending judgment on Nineveh.
This time they thought themselves untouchable. Interestingly enough, if you check history, it was the kings own choices that made way for their destruction. So… around 100 years after Jonah preaches, and they repent - they’re so far gone that God sends Nahum. This time they don’t repent, they’d forgotten the lesson God taught through Jonah. God did what He had to do… He dealt with their sin - when they wouldn’t.
Love you all! Dig in and live it out!
