Good Morning “Light Shiners.” Today we are in 2 Corinthians 3.
Jesus said He was the light of the world (John 8:12, 9:5). He told the Disciples with Him, they were the light of the world - and to let their light shine.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14 NIV
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 NIV
Actually Scripture is full of references regarding Jesus and light - His followers and their light. It’s easy to read these references and assume that we’re just talking about being nice, being different or living more like Jesus. Yes I believe that’s true. But I also believe there’s more to it.
In Exodus 34:29 when Moses came down off the mountain after receiving the 10 commandments, in the presence of God - his face was radiant. So much so that the Israelites were afraid of him. That encounter is what Paul references here.
“Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?”
2 Corinthians 3:7-8 NIV
From the time we receive Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior we receive the Holy Spirit (Roman’s 8:9; Ephesians 1:13-14). We are the Temple of the Living God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We now know that biologically we indeed give off Imperceivable light through what is called bio photon emission. What if this light we are supposed to be shining is real, and could be perceivable? It appears like it is.
We are warned not to quench the fire of the Holy Spirt with our sin (1 Thessalonians 5:19). What if it’s as simple as allowing the Holy Spirit to shine through us by remaining “in step” with Him through His Word and living accordingly? What if embracing the world and its sin is what further veils the light of Jesus.
As the time Moses was away from the Presence grew longer, the light faded — its fading hidden from Israel’s eyes by Moses’ veil. (II Cor 3:12-13) With the indwelling Spirit within us, sin and pulling away (opposite of James 4:7-8) from God, is the reason we don’t shine and others don’t see!
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 NIV
We know we are drawn to light. Leave a group of people in a totally dark room for a few minutes… it gets very weird. The instant a light is lit, everyone immediately moves toward it. What if the REAL light of Jesus living in us has the same affect on those around us in this dark world?
What if light is thing that draws us to certain people over others? We all know there are those individuals, on fire for Jesus - that we just can’t get enough of. They actually appear radiant. We comment on how “bright” their eyes are. Think about the things we say. “She lights up the whole room when she walks in.” Maybe we really do perceive more than we know. Maybe all the Jesus talk about light isn’t figurative, it’s literal? What if I was to tell you that even a quick study of the original Greek language used indicates it IS in fact LITERAL. What if when Jesus said “Let your light shine”, He REALLY MEANT it!
