Good Morning “Crucified.” Today we are in Galatians 2.
Paul, dealing the issue of Justification reminds us in this chapter that we are justified by Grace through Faith in Jesus - plus nothing. Some were hanging on to their Jewish Customs, feeling good about themselves as a result, and expecting converted Gentiles to live by them as well.
We all seem to have this innate desire to feel better than, richer than, more than, stronger than, even more righteous than those around us. We are masters at the public show. We attempt to make our lives look amazing to others who see them on social media. There is something about a nice car, a big house, or nice things that seem to say “I’ve made it”… at least culturally. Our workouts, travel experiences, what we eat and even what we drink are posted online and beckon “likes” from all who view. To what end? Glory to God? Or, glory to… me?
Specifically Paul is dealing with those who, by their customs, elevated themselves above the new Gentile converts as more Holy or Righteous. Don’t we have a tendency to do the same… it feels good to think of ourselves as better than - admit it. We must acknowledge our flesh is peaking through and it’s NOT good.
Paul’s checking us up in a big way, reminding us that it’s only by Grace that we are saved and justified. It’s not in ANY WAY of ourselves. In fact, if we have truly received Jesus, our old self is GONE! It’s ALL Him!
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” Galatians 2:20-21 NIV
If the old us is gone, and it’s now Christ in us, living through us - why do we try to take credit for any righteousness we reflect? Silly isn’t it? What if every part of our lives gave Glory to God as it should - instead of glory for us?
