Good Morning “Discerners”. Today we are in Jeremiah 23.
“and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.”
Matthew 24:11 NIV
What do you think of when you think of prophets? Or prophecy? Future telling? Ummm… kind of, once at least.
Before we had the complete Word of God, He spoke through the prophets, giving them His Word for the people. “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,”
Hebrews 1:1 NIV
We now have the complete revealed Word of God and are told that He has given us ALL we need. “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” 2 Peter 1:3 NIV
All means all and that’s all all means.
So question… if He’s already given us ALL we need, why would we need modern day prophets bringing us a “new” Word from God. Answer… we don’t! Actual Biblical prophets shouldn’t be doing that.
“but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” Hebrews 1:2 NIV
You see, now we have Jesus, and His Holy Spirit living in us, (Romans 8:9, John 14:16-17) Who illuminates / teaches the already revealed Word of God to us (John 14:26). Obedient prophets once foretold The Word of God as He revealed it to them. Modern day Biblical prophets forth-tell, or bring forth Gods already revealed Word. They take Gods already revealed Word and “led” by The Holy Spirit preach it, deliver it to us attempting to apply it accurately to our current situations. Pastors, Teachers, Biblical Prophets can accelerate the learning process, but we each have a Teacher… The Holy Spirit.
We must KNOW The Word of God and be discerning because many will come claiming to have a Word from The Lord that doesn’t line up with Scripture at all! Without a good working knowledge of Scripture we don’t know if they’re preaching The Word, or “their word”.
If you haven’t already, you must read this chapter! God through Jeremiah describes His plan - for fake prophecy and the fake prophets claiming to have a “new word from “God””.
