Good Morning “Eye Lifters”. Today we are in Psalm 123.
Our church has a giant cross that obviously extends heavenward. I love it! It may be my favorite part of our entire building. When I am coming into town from the west, I often look in its direction. When I am finally able to spy it - there is a weird unexplainable comfort and peace that comes over me. Let me be clear, it has nothing to do with the wood the cross is made from or the bricks of the building that supports it… I don’t harbor some form of idol worship toward it. For me, it is simply a visible symbol pointing heavenward, of The One that dwells there. The One who paid it all so that you and I might be saved!
I am reminded of His love, His faithfulness, and I am reminded of my young son and the fact that he gave his life to Jesus one night after AWANA while gazing up at it. “Jesus died on a cross like that,” he remarked… “so that we could be forgiven of our sins.” Yup… He did. What followed was the typical discussion and a prayer of confession and repentance. Special times for sure!
What’s my point? My point is despite the fact the Psalmist was making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem to worship, he understood that our Lord dwelled in the heavens. “I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven.” Psalms 123:1 See also (Mark 16:19, Romans 8:34).
The temple he was heading to, our buildings, may be the place we gather to come together as One. They may be the bricks and mortar that hold memories of intimate times of worship and communion with Him. They may have symbols like crosses or steeple’s that point to and draw our eyes heavenward, but let us never forget the One the symbols point to. Let us never forget the One responsible for the comfort, peace, and movement of The Spirit in those times of worship that formed the memories.
May we never forget anytime we seek Him (Psalm 29:13), He is there in the heavens, but guess what… He everywhere else as well through The Holy Spirit (Psalm 139:7-12)! He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Remember Him when you look to the heavens, remember Him when you see the gifts of His hands everywhere you look! (Romans 1:18-20)
Love you all! Dig in!
