Good Morning “Faithful Studiers.” Today we begin 1 Chronicles 1. Are You still with us? I hope so… hang on, keep grinding, don’t grow weary as you study. Every chapter has something for us (2 Timothy 3:16-17). As we begin the books of Chronicles, how about a little overview?
1st and 2nd Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah are really one long continuous story. We (men) separated them and gave them book names based on the content of each part.
As we finished 2 Kings the future seemed bleak for Judah. In Babylonian exile, many likely thought this was the end. Never forget that the Bible is the story of Jesus, and the redemption offered to mankind through His shed blood. Judah is the line of Jesus. We’ve already read the New Testament. We know how the Story ends. He / We who are with Him win! Therefore the story cannot be over. How does Judah get there? These books we are about to read help connect the dots.
We begin with some more of those genealogies. Don’t let yourself drift to the “what’s the point” question. The point is, where we came from and how we got here matters. It paints a picture of Gods Sovereignty, Faithfulness, Grace and Mercy, the midst of His Children’s repeated rebellion. This piece alone should give us hope and encouragement. He’s not done with us yet!
The 2nd part gives us a history of the Kings of Israel with special emphasis on and more details for David and Solomon - for obvious reasons.
The final part of the book deals with Judahs return from exile through the eyes of Ezra and Nehemiah - and their reinstitution of True and Proper Worship. As we have seen repeatedly, He is never far from us when we are humbly repentant.
“From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’” Acts 17:26-28 NIV
Be encouraged in His love. Love you all! Dig in!
