Good Morning “Bride of Christ.” Today we are in Genesis 24 - the story of Abraham the father seeking a bride for his son Isaac. Oh, but guess what? This story is a picture of so much more.
Let’s note first Abrahams obedience and faith. He is to stay in this land God showed him. Yet, he knows his son needs a wife from his own people to keep the line to the Savior pure. So he sends his servant on a journey back to Ur. From where they were at in Canaan Ur is about 500 miles away, it would have taken months.
His servant wonders how he will possibly find the “right” one for Isaac, so he prays to God and offers a test. The very first woman who comes to the well Rebekah passes with flying colors. The servant stands in awe… blown away at Gods faithfulness. She not only offers him a drink, the first part of the test, but hastily waters his camels. No easy task. Each camel can consume up to 25 gallons of water - he has 10. She hurries back and forth from the well to the trough filling it with her jar. Impressive!
The servant, convinced, offers her gifts from the father. Now she is officially betrothed. They must return to her fathers house and work out the final details. Notice the servant gives “testimony” concerning all that God has done. The Servant testifies concerning the Bride of the Son. Once the bride price is negotiated and the deal is complete the bride and the servant must walk the long journey back to the father and the son.
As I said, this story is a “Picture” of a much greater “Story”. It’s the Story God is working in each of our lives.
I challenge you… reread Genesis 24 with these character representations in mind.
Abraham - “The Father God”
Isaac - “The Son, Jesus”
The Servant - “The Holy Spirit”
Rebekah - “The Bride, Us”
His Gifts - “Spiritual Gifts”
Ur - “The World”
The Journey - “Our Journey from old to new, The Promise.”
God gives us Word “Pictures” throughout Scripture that we might better understand Him and His ways. This is not the only one.
Love you all! Dig in!!! Stand in Awe!
