Good Morning “Blessed by Revelation.” We’re in chapter 1 of the book of Revelation.
While exiled on the Island of Patmos the Apostle John receives a Revelation from Jesus Christ brought to him through an angel - A vision shown to him. It was shown not spoken so John must interpret what he saw when at times he likely struggled to explain it - thus the symbols we see. As Christians it’s common to shy away from the book of Revelation because of controversy, confusion and maybe some fear. As we read about the things to come it can be scary… if misunderstood. Check this out though - the book of Revelation was meant to be an encouragement to true believers. It is also the only book of the Bible that comes with a promise.
“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.” Revelation 1:3 NIV
If the time of Jesus’ return was near then - obviously it’s even nearer now. When we look at prophecy and compare it with what we see happening in our world today - it seems He could return at any moment.
Revelation was originally addressed to 7 actual church’s that many believe represent the entire church. Why? The use of the number 7 in Scripture represents completeness, perfection, 100%, the whole. There were way more than 7 churches in the world at the time and certainly God wasn’t only interested in these. Many have interpreted these 7 to represent 7 periods in the church’s history or progression. Remember God works in ALL things, multifaceted, so likely yes to all of it. Don’t stress trying to figure it all out, apply what applies - “take it to heart.”
He will return as He promised…
“Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen.” Revelation 1:7 NIV
John is to write down and explain what he’s shown - 3 progressions.
““Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.”
Revelation 1:19 NIV
As we dig in I will do my best, not to add my opinion to every symbol John uses, but to help bring out application for us.
Love you all! Dig in for yourself! Be blessed!
