Good Morning “Born Again.” Today we start 1 Peter with Chapter 1.
Peter spent the final years of his life ministering in Rome. When he learned of the suffering of Christians in other provinces of Rome he wrote to encourage them to be faithful. Today we know this letter as 1 Peter. Although we personally are not facing the kind of persecution they were, we struggle at times to stay on track in a world that seems to be all over the place. Consider Peters words in your own struggle.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:3-5
In our struggle against sin and the things that weigh us down, we are reminded that we have a hope, an inheritance, a covering from The Lord, and a Salvation that can never be taken away. The implication is - this is enough for us to continue faithful!
“Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.””
1 Peter 1:13-16
The Truth is, through the blood of Jesus we are washed clean, made Holy. It’s not because of anything we have done, but the finished work of Jesus. According to Romans 12:1, it’s reasonable for us to live like we are thankful for what He has done. How do we demonstrate our thankfulness? Paul has some words for us…
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:1-2
