Good Morning “Reconciled in Christ.” Today we start Colossians. Dig into chapter 1
Paul wrote to the church in Colossae while he was in prison in Rome awaiting trial by Cesar. The Colossians were mostly Gentiles but like the Galatians were being pressured to follow Jewish Law by some of the Jews. Not just traditional Jewish Law actually, but a bunch of other added non Biblical laws as well. Some were claiming to have visions or secret spiritual knowledge, exalting themselves - even above God.
Knowing Paul is addressing them from prison gives special weight to his focus - All we need is Jesus, plus nothing. Basically saying bluntly “Leave the Gospel alone.” It’s miraculous enough already.
“But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.”
Colossians 1:22-23
Reconciled from the Oxford Dictionary :verb
past tense: reconciled; past participle: reconciled
1. restore friendly relations between."she wanted to be reconciled with her father" 2. cause to coexist in harmony; make or show to be compatible.
Some things to note from this opening passage.
- It was Jesus shed blood, fully man, fully God that was sufficient to pay the penalty for our sin. His sacrifice “Reconciled” us to God. Made us ok again, able to coexist with Him. It’s the only way John 14:6. There is no other way. I know we live in a world where if we believe something bad enough we are told it somehow becomes our truth… NOT IN THIS CASE! He’s God, He makes the rules. He made a way, one way - Jesus.
- It’s past tense. It already happened. All our sin removed as far as the “East is from the West.” The payment has been made, it only needs to be accepted. Faith accompanied by repentant action as demonstration of true belief, is all that is required. “God would not except me if He knew what I’ve done…” He already has! “While you were still sinning Christ died for you.” Romans 5:8
- Through Faith - We are seen Holy in Gods sight as though looking through the perfected blood of Jesus. We need not add anything further. In fact we are warned against it.
Why would we not want to be reconciled to the God that holds our life in His hands? Every breath, every beat of our heart - He is the source of all good things. Why would anyone willingly choose to remain at odds with Him? Crazy.
Love you all! Dig in!
