Good Morning “Careful Livers”. Today we are in Romans 14.
Grace wasn’t a new thing. It was pervasive through the OT as God dealt with rebellion. Yet, there were some still adhering to Old Testament customs. That’s fine, Paul is saying, but don’t judge others because they aren’t. Additionally Paul makes it clear… we have a responsibility to those who may be tempted into sin. Some still believed that certain foods were unclean. As he was speaking to believers he had a reminder for them. We don’t get to say we are living sacrificial, selfless lives but disregard the things we may do that cause others to be tempted to sin.
“Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.”
Romans 14:20-21 NIV
Anything, means ANYTHING! Exercising our freedoms in Christ should not put a stumbling block in someone else’s way! Nothing we do should ever derail the work Jesus is doing in them. Paul speaks about the same subject to the church in Corinth.
““I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.” 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 NIV
Earlier in our chapter here Paul reminds us that we will all stand before Jesus one day to give an account -
“It is written: “ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’ ” So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”
Romans 14:11-12 NIV
