Good Morning “Fisherman”. Today we are in Jonah 1.
Let’s rewind a bit from where we’ve been recently. The Word of The Lord came to Jonah during the reign of Jereboam II about 785 - 750BC. For perspective, that’s decades before Assyria took Israel into captivity and couple hundred years before Babylon took Judah.
The book of Jonah is different than the other prophets we’ve been studying. This book focuses on Jonah himself and Gods call for him to warn the great city of Nineveh (Capital of Assyria) to repent or be destroyed. The warning piece sounds familiar doesn’t it? There’s something special this time though. Do you know what it is? Nineveh wasn’t Jewish… they were pagan Gentiles. Don’t let anyone ever tell you that repentance and salvation was only for the Jews in the Old Testament.
Chapter 1 serves as a warning to us all… don’t ignore the call of God. Jonah did what many want to do when asked to do something uncomfortable - something hard. Jonah attempted to flee from The Lord. David knew well that’s not possible (Psalm 139:7-12).
The story is probably familiar to you… God brings a horrible storm in response to Jonah’s disobedience. The ship is tossed, the crew casts lots to determine who’s to blame, and the lot falls to Jonah. The crew ultimately tosses him over, but Gods got a job for him to do. So, God protects Jonah. He’s swallowed by the big fish… 3 days and nights he’s in the fish. Hmmmm… 3 days. Sounds like there could be a metaphor here (Matthew 12:40).
He wont let us continue to say no indefinitely. Also… We forget that when God calls you to it, He’ll provide the power to get you through it (Acts 1:8, Matthew 28:18-20).
Love you all! Dig in and live it out!
