Amos 7

Good Morning “Objects of Grace.”  Today we are in Amos 7.

The last section of Amos describes a series of 5 visions of Gods impending judgment.  This chapter gives us the first 3.

The first vision is a plague of
devouring locusts, and the second is a consuming fire. In both instances, Amos cries out on behalf of his people.  He intercedes for them, noting that they are so small none will survive.  Amos knew that if God were to follow through, “Jacob” (the whole community of Israel) would have been completely destroyed.

In both cases The Lord relented.  Wait, so did God change His mind?  Hmmmm, be careful here… “I the Lord do not change.” Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬  Also check Numbers 23:19; 1 Samuel 15:29; Romans 11:29.  Neither did God need reminded that His wrath, in that way, would completely destroy Israel. He is omniscient.  He knows EVERYTHING (Psalm 139:1-4; Hebrews 4:13; 1 John 3:20)

I believe God never intended to go through with either judgment. Rather, He used the Truth of the extent that He could go - to incite Amos to pray and the people to repent.  It wasn’t an empty threat either.  How many times do we as parents describe the extent of the possible wrath to come - in an effort to bring about repentance?

“I will tan your hide.”

“No no dad, please no, I’ll clean my room… see here I go.”

It’s not an empty threat, it’s a fact!  That’s what is going to happen if you choose to ignore the warning.

Instead God chose a plumb line, a way to measure each individual.  Each one will be judged by The Word of God. Even in Gods judgment through the Assyrian invasion, as bad as it was, Israel would be reminded of the other possibilities.  Gods judgment could have been much worse, He had the power.  Instead, He gave Grace.  You see He takes no pleasure in bringing His wrath upon His creation - even the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 33:11).  He would rather we simply turn back to Him.

Jew and Gentile alike are judged according to the same standard: God’s Word.  Grace is extended through the Blood of Jesus to each one who will believe and repent.  Death, eternal separation - is the impending judgment.  However; through repentance we experience Grace through Jesus (Romans 3:23; 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Love you all!  Dig in and live it out!
