Daniel 1

Good Morning “Unwavering”.  Today we begin Daniel with chapter 1.

The book of Daniel is really divided into 2 parts.  6 stories of how God protected and promoted Daniel and his 3 cohorts; and Daniel’s visions containing both near term and future term end time prophecies.

This book records events taking place during the time of Judahs exile in Babylon.  As we’ve been studying parts of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel… this was also going on.

When King Nebuchadnezzar sacks Jerusalem, and takes the people into captivity / exile; he selects some of the most handsome young men for his service.  They had to be of particular, or royal lineage, smart, and teachable.

Daniel and his boys (just teens) were among them.  Now, before we get to the application, understand what these boys had already gone through.  First their city is sieged, everything they had and knew was ripped from them.  Then they, with the others, were forced to journey a minimum 4 months to Babylon through harsh conditions.  Typically they would have been stripped, and chained - forced to march barefoot.  A death march over hundreds of miles.  Those who died… died.

When one was selected to serve the king as these boys were they were typically made eunuchs, so that there was no threat to the kings wives (ask your parents what that means). It’s reasonable to expect this is what Daniel and his friends were subjected to.  Immediately they were stripped of the only thing they had left, their identity’s.  They were given Babylonian names meant to honor Babylonian gods instead of their Jewish names honoring The One True God.  Special diet, special training, special everything in order to better meet the kings needs.

Given all of their horrific experiences one might expect them to waver in faith, as they were expected to eat food and drink wine sacrificed to idols.  We’d maybe even expect God to give them a pass?  Not the case with Daniel… he is rock solid, and smart.  Read for yourself!

As believers we compromise in small ways everyday… don’t we?  Seems kinda weak in the face of the teens faithfulness - doesn’t it?

Love you all!  Dig in!
