Good Morning “Not Idolater’s”. Today we are in Ezekiel 6.
Charades is over, Ezekiel is now commanded to speak prophecy to Israel. However; his manner still carries symbolism. He is to turn and speak toward the mountains - specifically regarding judgment because of the high places. The mountains themselves didn’t do anything wrong… it’s a matter of what Gods people had made them.
As we read through Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings we get picture of Israel’s descent into idolatry over a period of about 500 years. It began seemingly innocent. Why travel so far to worship YAWEH in the Temple when we can worship Him right here, on the mountain?
Ummm… except that’s not what God said. Changing where they worshiped, soon gave way to subtle changes in how they worshipped, and in time - who they worshipped. Bringing animal sacrifices to the mountain and presenting them to The Lord ultimately gave way to infant sacrifices to Baal and Moloch.
As one looked toward the mountains as Ezekiel does here, one would no doubt see alters to fake gods in the distance - even godless temples. God is about to bring His judgment on the mountains and those that worshipped there.
The sink into idolatry is a slow fade.
Remember, high places in Israel began as alternative places to worship Yahweh. The Jews who built these places still wanted to worship the God of Israel, but they wanted to worship on their own terms. That one little compromise was the wedge the enemy needed to pry their hearts away. Before long, they were worshipping pagan idols. Each step they took away from the Word of God made the next one easier to take.
That’s exactly how it works for us too. Rarely will a Christian move from a faithful walk with Jesus one day, to complete rebellion and apostasy the next. Instead, we make one small compromise today and another tomorrow. If left unchecked, we soon end up in a bad place wondering how we got there. As things bottom out, we ask ourselves when was the last time I went to church? When was the last time I prayed or opened my Bible? Why am I spending so much time in the company of ungodly people? How did I fill my days with so many worldly pursuits? How did my life get so messed up? Where are you Lord? Why have You abandoned me? You know the answer to that question (Genesis 3:6-11).
Love you all! Dig in!
