Good Morning “Crosseyed”. Today we are in Ezekiel 31.
God gives us every breath we take… He’s that intimately involved in our lives. It’s important to remember, however; that our Sovereign God is not just active in the lives of each individual but He is active in EVERY international affair. He is not in any way a spectator.
Like all nations, the Lord had raised up Assyria for a purpose. Assyria was called by God to bring discipline against the northern tribes of Israel. The king of Assyria did indeed conquer northern Israel and Samaria as God intended (2 Kings 18:11-12). Yet for him it was not enough. He went after Judah, despite Gods warning to leave her alone (2 Chronicles 32:1). Gods plan for Judahs discipline would come later. For now, Gods hand of protection was over Judah. Perhaps you remember the story… God sent the “Angel of The Lord” into the Assyrian camp and wiped out 185,000 Assyrians without lifting a finger (2 Chronicles 32:20-22, 2 Kings 19:35). NO nation stands - apart from Gods sustaining power!
Egypt’s worst offense against God’s people was introducing them to idolatry. The question God is asking Egypt is “who do you think you are? Just how great do you think you are?” Assyria was once equally great or greater than Egypt… what happened to her?
Egypt’s fate is to lie among the uncircumcised (31:8, 28:10). Egypt had their own form of circumcision and believed it, together with proper burial - was essential for entry into the afterlife. While not being circumcised is a physical concept, it is also used spiritually and metaphorically. Un-circumcision is a concept / word used by the prophets to depict uncleanness, defilement, and unworthiness.
So… what God was truly saying to Egypt, to all of Judah in Babylon, and frankly to all hearing or reading this message was, in their sin, there is no afterlife as they hope for. There is only death (separation from God) for those who live in unrepentant sin (Romans 6:23).
Circumcision or un-circumcision, Remnant or fallen, believer or unbeliever - the distinction isn’t a mater of geography, DNA, or Heritage. All that matters in the end is, what have you done with Jesus? In this allegory, the only tree that matters is the one Jesus died on for you and me.
Love you all! Dig in!
