Judges 14

Good Morning “No Detour Takers.”  Today we are in Judges 14.

Israel is being oppressed by the Philistines.  Although they are oppressed, they still interact with them, trade with them etc.  This time is similar to how the Jews were oppressed by Rome during Jesus time.  Philistine rules.

God raises up Sampson to deliver them from the Philistines… but Sampson has some issues.  This chapter is jammed packed with both Sampson’s sin struggles and reminders that God uses even our sin to bring about His good end.

Sampson sees a Philistine woman and must have her for his wife - despite his parents urging to take a wife within the nation of Israel.  This immediately speaks to Sampson’s unwillingness to submit to his father’s authority - and tendency to go his own way.  Forget his disobedience to The Law, how wise is it to marry within the enemies camp?  How is Sampson going to deliver Israel from the Philistines if his allegiance is now divided.  God had a plan in this, and we see it unfold here.

Sampson was a Nazarite.  As such he was set apart from sin and unto service for the Lord.  Yet he frivolously sins.  He returns to the lion he ripped apart only to harvest some honey, needlessly coming in contact with a dead carcass - forbidden by Levitical law.  Then, as is often the case, he drags others with him in his sin, as he gives some to his parents who unknowingly partake.  Now they have, through transmission become unclean as well.

More sin coming… In the marriage process he holds a feast.  The original word used here denotes more than just a feast - it was a drinking party.  The Nazarite vow forbade Sampson from taking wine upon his lips.  He doesn’t seem to mind.

Sampson is called to deliver Israel as the next Judge.  He’s supposed to be waging war against the Philistines not partying with them and marrying them.  Dig into this chapter if you haven’t already to see how God worked through Sampson’s rebellion to steer him to where he wanted him anyway.

We can do this the easy way or the hard way.  Samson definitely took some detours, only to end up at the same place anyway.  There was an easier way.

Love you all!  Dig in!
