Good Morning “Those Who Live With Consequences.” Today we are in Judges 9.
Today we read about the consequences of Gideons “Hero” lifestyle. The once coward, then hero all by the hand of God - kinda spun off after his success. Reads like a modern day success story doesn’t it. Gideon’s Ephod “Trophy”, was only the beginning it seems. Like Solomon he too many wives and concubines - which together produces 70 sons! I wonder how many daughters were in the mix.
One of his sons Abimelek, was the son of a concubine from Shechem. She was not a Hebrew. Abimelek becomes the star of today’s story. Left without a ruler Abimelek sees an opportunity and begins to campaign right to the top garnering initial support from his own mother’s relatives in Shechem.
His first act of business, hire some rag tag misfits, and slaughter the rest of Gideons 70 sons. “All on the same stone”, suggests this was mass execution by beheading. This would have been a process… in clear view for all to see and learn to fear.
Gideons pride, led to some self worship, which appears to have lead to some frivolous behavior, which led to a single son destroying the rest of what would have been Gideons namesake legacy.
We all make choices every day. Choices come with consequences. Some good. Some bad. Some… more than we can bear alone. Choose wisely how you live each day.
Love you all! Dig in!
