Jeremiah 35

Good Morning “Examples of Faith”.  Today we are in Jeremiah 35.

““Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak with them and bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers; then offer them wine to drink.” Jeremiah‬ ‭35‬:‭2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Ok… now what is going on?  Who are the Rechabites? What does wine have to do with anything?

They are the descendants of Rechab through Jonadab (Jehonadab). Maybe that doesn’t help either… let’s keep going.

They belonged to a group of people called the Kenites, who accompanied the children of Israel into the land of Canaan and dwelt among them.

Ok… no biggy right?  But… They were Gentiles.

God has always shown His grace towards anyone who chooses to follow Him.  Many people believe that Israel was the only group of people the Lord allowed to enter the Promised Land, along with Joshua. Not so. The Kenites were right there with them.  Why? Well, for starters, Moses married a Kenite wife (Judges 1:16). In the days of Deborah and Barak, because of Barak’s cowardice, it was a Kenite woman who defeated evil king Sisera (Judges 4:17).

Most of the Kenites dwelt in cities and adopted the habits (and sins) of “settled” life, but Johnadab forbade his descendants to drink wine or live in cities. They were also commanded always to lead a nomadic life. These Kenites adhered to the law laid down by their patriarch, even up till the days of Jeremiah.

So why in the face of Judahs disobedience and Gods promise of judgment does He mention them here?  He’s making a point!  “These Gentiles will follow the command of their long-dead ancestor, but you will not follow the Word of the Living God - even after I sent you countless prophets!”

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God used Gentile examples to both convict and even make jealous - His people who were living in rebellion.

Jesus did too.  He told a story using Gentile examples that led to Jews trying to kill him.  Check out Luke 4:24-30

Using us, Gentiles, to make Israel jealous; that they might return to Him - was and is a part of Gods plan (Romans10:19; 11:11).  Here’s a question… could he use you?  I mean to say, are you obedient and faithful - such that God can use you and an example?  An object lesson?

Love you all!  Dig in!
