Good Morning “Crosseyed”. Today we are in Proverbs 23.
Whether it’s observing children in the community, watching children at sports / arts camp, or even keeping an eye on my own grand kids - they seem drawn to the trouble maker. The “cool kids”. Students… you may be dealing with this even now. Adults, think back to your earlier years as you grew up. Elementary years, teen years, even young adult years… it never seems to end. Why what’s the draw? What if it’s not the kids but the sin in them we are drawn to? Why are we naturally drawn to sin?
We know when we choose righteousness in a world full of sin offerings God is glorified. So… is it God who tempts us, to test us? This concept has been suggested but NO absolutely not. James addresses this very issue, then describes its result. “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
James 1:13-15 NIV
It comes from within. David answers the age old question, “Is man born inherently good or inherently evil.”
“Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” Psalms 51:5 NIV
Paul refers to it as well as He explains the grace of Jesus that is able to save us despite our sin (Romans 5:12-21).
Recognizing this sinful condition we are ALL born with, and our tendency to sin even after we are set free from sins grip by The Blood of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17) - what is Gods expectation of us? DON’T sin! But HOW?
We MUST keep our eyes on Jesus and The Cross (Hebrews 12:2) - EVERY DAY. EVERY MINUTE! Actively purpose to think on righteous things NOT sinful things (Philippians 4:8), by remaining in The Word (Joshua 1:8), and maintain captive control of our thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5). Through Jesus and the Holy Spirit in us we now have the power to choose something other than sin… SO CHOOSE (Romans 6:18)!
“Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 23:17-18 NIV
We know TRUE joy doesn’t come from those things anyway… so why go there? (John 15:10-11)
Love you all! Dig in!
