Good Morning “Partakers of the New / Everlasting Covenant”.
Today we are in Isaiah 61.
In this chapter Isaiah outlines the New or “Everlasting Covenant” offered to Gods people. Old Covenant, New Covenant, Everlasting Covenant… what are we talking about here.
First remember a “Covenant” is not a contract. A contract can be broken. It assumes - I will, if you do. A “covenant”, simply stated, says I will no matter what.
God established the “Old Covenant ” with Israel based on The Law. It contained specific requirements for worship. The associated sacrificial system of the Old Testament provided a way for Israel to demonstrate their faith in God while simultaneously providing a temporary atonement / covering for their sin. Adherence to this system promised blessing from The Lord. Simply put their “belief” in God was demonstrated by obedience. Perfect adherence, perfect obedience to The Law proved nearly impossible… that was part of the point. Israel / we need a Savior. A sacrifice sufficient to pay the price of sin once and for all.
Jesus didn’t come to abolish the Old Law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). His ministry brought to completion the purpose and expectations of the Old Testament Law and ushered in the “New or Everlasting Covenant” Isaiah refers to in this chapter. He did what we could never do ourselves (Hebrews 10:1-10).
The “New Covenant”, offers Salvation for all eternity, by Gods Grace, through the Blood of Jesus shed on The Cross - to all of those who truly believe (Ephesians 2:8-9). Our belief is demonstrated in the same way Israel’s was in the Old Testament.
Obedience…
““If you love me, keep my commands. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”” John 14:15, 21 NIV
And sacrifice…
But wait more sacrificing? I thought the days of sacrificing bulls and goats were gone? Sacrifices are a thing of the past…
Are they?
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1 NIV
No more blood of bulls and goats. Now He wants you; living, breathing, and serving - for we all have work to do… (Ephesians 2:10, Acts 1:8, Matthew 28:18-20).
Love you all! Dig in!
