Good Morning “Cost Counters.” Today we are in Proverbs 19.
Accountability and responsibility are in short supply these days. Everything is someone else’s fault. As a people, generally speaking, we are pretty big on finger pointing, not so much on accepting responsibility for our actions. We want to be a people free to make our own choices, EVEN if those choices are contrary to Scripture. I’ll never forget the student who told me, “You made your mistakes, let me make mine.”
Yet, when the consequences of those choices catch up to us - we look for someone to blame. Anyone is free game - even The Lord. Consider the words of the first man and the first sin… “The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Genesis 3:12 NIV
In just one verse Adam blames his wife, and God! He takes zero responsibility for his actions.
“A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.” Proverbs 19:3 NIV
It wasn’t like God hadn’t already warned him! “…but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.””
Genesis 2:17 NIV
The consequences that followed were huge (Genesis 3:14-19)! We’re living with them to this day. Our Heavenly Father who loves us, knows how to discipline us perfectly!
Many of us have children. Many of you will have them someday. He gives us a model to discipline our own children. Not because we hate them or want to see harm come on them… NO! Exactly the opposite! We want to see them thrive and live! (Hebrews 12:4-13)
“Discipline your children, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to their death.”
Proverbs 19:18 NIV
Love you all! Dig in!
