Good Morning “Humble Repenters.” Today we are in Isaiah 37.
In yesterday’s devo we discussed the divided nature of our world, our nation, and the church. This kind of division comes when individuals are divided / separated from The One True God. In Him we are one and seek the needs of each other. Apart from Him we are selfish and arrogantly seek to supply our own needs, often by placing our trust in men or empty systems - instead of God.
Israel is living out prophecy at this point. Hezekiah’s plan to seek protection and deliverance for Egypt has obviously failed. Assyrias King Sennacherib, taunts Hezekiah, mocks The One True God and promises utter destruction - through a letter. With a little nudge from the Prophet Isaiah… Hezekiah finally gets it! In one of the most iconic Bible stories in all of Scripture. Hezekiah goes to “The House of The Lord”, The Temple, to do business. What’s the business he needs to do? Humble repentance. “…Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord.” Isaiah 37:14 NIV
He laid the letter before The Lord. He’s brought to a place where ultimately he’s finally laying it all before The Lord. In humble submission he was proclaiming ONLY You God have the power to address this. But check it out, his prayer wasn’t just petition. It was worship, it was humble submission and repentance, it was acknowledgment that He alone is God.
“Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.”
Isaiah 37:16 NIV
Man… I’m guessing in some measure we can all relate to Hezekiah. With Hezekiah’s repentance… what was Gods response? Well… I’ll leave that for you to read for yourself.
Love you all! Dig in!
