Good Morning “Spanked”. Today we are in Jeremiah 49.
I graduated high school in 1988 - nearly 40 years ago! Wow! I guess I’m old now. Things were quite different then. Teachers and school administrators still had tools they could use to modify behavior, build respect, fear of consequences, and bring about repentance in us as students. Tools like paddles, and wet kick boards (swim class).
The worst two spankings I ever got were in middle school. The worst was a paddle spanking in shop class - for purposely pinching narrow boards between the table saw blade and the fence. Ultimately the stick of lumber would get shot out, across the room like a bullet! AWESOME!!! Also… VERY DANGEROUS! After one warning, came 3 swats the next time! The second worst spanking was with a wet kick board in swimming class, on my wet Speedo (that’s what we wore then), for dunking girls during free time. I think I got 2 warnings that time!
Both instances were spurred on by dudes around me, I was the “cool” guy. I never questioned those teachers love for me, or their intent. In fact I knew they wanted the best for me. Both teachers in fact were favorites of mine. I knew I was WAY in the wrong and I accepted responsibility for my actions. Lessons learned.
If you can understand the just consequences for my sin, then you for sure should be able to understand Gods justice. He certainly had to punish Israel’s idolatry, as well as Ammon, whom He used to punish Israel’s idolatry. It was the people of Ammon who had enticed Israel to sin with their false idol worship of Molech in the first place. And worship of Molech was particularly evil.
“Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.” Leviticus 18:21 NIV
It’s interesting that the command above is given to us in the midst of God outlining a whole slew of unacceptable sexual practices (Read Leviticus 18). Is that our world too? Hmmm… think free sex… then abortion. We may call it by different names these days but the sin is the same.
Israel turned away from God and His Word, and instead chose to affiliate with worldly Ammon, to the point where they were sacrificing their children to Ammon’s false god, Molech - by burning them! Do we also sacrifice our children to a whole slew of worldly ideas?
Don’t miss the continued offer of reconciliation and repentance - even within these words describing Gods judgment. God still disciplines sin (Hebrews 12:4-), and He still offers a way back - Forgiveness and restoration through Jesus. (John 3:16, 1 John 1:9).
Love you all! Dig in!
