Isaiah 28

Good Morning “Those Being Trained Up.”  Today we are in Isaiah 28.

Yesterday we talked about producing fruit.  Todays chapter begins a section referred to as the Book of Woes.  It runs from Isaiah 28-35.  Isaiah uses Israel’s covenant with Egypt under King Hezekiah to parallel the future covenant that re-gathered Israel will make with the Antichrist (Daniel 9). This 2nd covenant will mark the beginning of the Tribulation.

The “Book of Woes” is a description of the woes that come upon Israel (Judah)  as a result of these two covenants.  The first part of Isaiah 28 describes woes related to the first covenant with Egypt, then it moves to woes that come from their alliance with the Antichrist.

28 ends on a more promising note. A farmer doesn’t keep on plowing indefinitely.  He sows in order to reap.  Has God been “turning your soil,” lately perhaps, mixing in a bit of “manure” even?  God is preparing you as a farmer prepares the land, to yield a bountiful crop of spiritual fruit!  Spiritual discipline is what this chapter has all been about.  Those who see the Father’s hand in it will profit.  “All this also comes from the Lord Almighty, whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent.” Isaiah‬ ‭28‬:‭29‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Often Gods plan involves hardship and suffering as He “works the ground, threshes the wheat” that is us (Hebrews 12:7-11).

This may look different at different times - in each of us.  He may rebuke us through His Word, as we study (2 Timothy 4:2).  He may use sickness. (Romans 5:3-4).  Sometimes, He even uses Satan himself.  Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” was also a “messenger of Satan.” (2 Corinthians 12:7)  That is the lesson of the book of Job.

God trains us for what’s next, and that requires refining (He’s gotta get out the bad stuff).  We must faithfully endure pain and trust in Him so that we can stand firmc glorify Him as we administer the Gospel at a time when others are being crushed by the weight of this World.

Endure His training.  Nobody trusts when a poorly trained, out-of-shape soldier says, “I got your back!”  Nor do they heed the words of the undisciplined Christian (James 1:2-4).

Love you all!  Dig in!
