Proverbs 14

Good Morning “Never Mocking.”  Today we are in Proverbs 14.

I’ve had occasion to overhear many conversations regarding the Pastor / Teachers message.  Maybe it’s a Sunday School message, maybe a youth message, or a Sunday morning message.  I’ve heard people criticize their pastors, our pastors even heard and heard about conversations regarding my own teaching.  If I’m honest I know Ive crossed the line myself as I dissect others teaching.

Truth is picking apart the teaching we receive is common.  We ARE called to be Bereans after all (Acts 17:10-12), but when checking the teaching we receive with The Word of God, crosses over into mocking or slander / gossip… guess what?  There’s a problem, and we’re part of it!  (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, Hebrews 13:17).

Furthermore in our haste to focus on the things we may not agree with, we learn nothing from the totality of the message.  It’s appropriate to approach the teacher with your questions rather than publicly mock or pick it apart.  Undermining the Pastor publicly only serves to divide the congregation from the one God has placed to Shepard them (Matthew 16:6,11, Mark 8:15.)  What is the end game, what is the goal?  Solomon makes the outcome clear.

“The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.” Proverbs‬ ‭14‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

There’s a fine line between wrestling with the pastors teaching and mocking it.  Where’s the line?  I think if we’re honest, we know!  As the Holy Spirit in us convicts… we know when we cross the line - but we cross anyway.  Why?  In my experience it’s often because the teaching has struck a cord, pulled a thread, exposed an area of our own lives that we would rather not deal with.  Instead, we challenge the credibility of the teacher.  Ahhh then we get to continue in our flesh… because after all, “They don’t know what they are talking about.”

The Word of God is pretty harsh concerning this issue… here’s some additional verses to study. (Proverbs 16:28, Proverbs 15:18, Proverbs 6:16-19, Romans 16:17-18,  Titus 3:9-11).

Love you all!  Dig in!
