Psalm 115

Good Morning “Not Idolators”.  Today we are in Psalm 115.

Sing with me… “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.” Psalms‬ ‭115‬:‭1‬

‬Many have sung this song over the years.  I don’t know about you but the Chris Tomlin version of this song really sticks in my head.

Here the Psalmist speaks of those idols made with gold, and silver by human hands.  They are powerless, empty - useless truly.  They provide  false hope, a false sense of security, an object to be worshiped falsely.  They become a tool of the evil one to distract us from the One True God… the ONLY One worthy of our worship.  The ONLY One truly alive and capable of providing for us that which we seek: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭22‬-‭25)

I believe these things are a part of the God sized hole we all have.  Through Jesus, The Holy Spirit, The Grace of God, given to us we can have them all!  Unfortunately we often seek them in all the wrong places, empty alternatives, distractions offered up by the evil one.  You see an idols aren’t only made of gold, silver or stone.  An idol is really anything we put before God, anything we chase after in an effort to manufacture that which ONLY He can provide.

Satans tactics and man’s sinful substitutions are as old as creation its self.  We see it all through Scripture.  He offered Adam and Eve an alternative and they took it.  David chose to replace Gods best with sin as he took Bathsheba.  Paul addresses a group of “intelligent, religious” Philosophers at Mars Hill who are doing the same (Acts 17:22-31).  Many laughed when Paul presented the Truth of The Resurrection.  The Psalmist presents it as he closes here as well (Psalm 115:17-18).

The same is True today!  Much of our world, like those who came before us, believe they have it all figured out.  Blinded by pride, they scoff and laugh at The Truth.

Like the Psalmist, like Paul, we have a responsibility to tell them anyway (Matthew 28:18-20, Romans 10:9-15, 1 Peter 3:15).  We’re the tool.  We do the telling… leave the convicting, changing, saving, sanctification to God…

Love you all!  Dig in!
