Jeremiah 31

Good Morning “Reconciled”.  Today we are in Jeremiah 31.

The end is near!  Exciting stuff in this chapter!  Northern Israel (at times called Ephraim because of where their idolatry began), and Judah will collectively be reunited and reconciled with God through Jesus.  I forget, how did Israel end up divided in the first place?  Let’s do some review.

After David, Solomon was anointed King.  When Solomon was old, his many wives corrupted him and he sinned against God (1 Kings 11:4-7). As a consequence, Solomon’s servant Jeroboam received 10 tribes of Israel to rule over.  Judah and Benjamin were left to be ruled by Solomon’s son, Rehoboam (1 Kings 11:30-31, 1 Kings 12:16,17). Together those two tribes were called “Judah” (1 Kings 12:23). From this point on (1&2 Kings) Jeroboam and his Sons ruled over what was called “Israel” in the north of the land while Rehoboam and his Sons ruled over what was called “Judah” in the south of the land.

After much rebellion against God, and rejecting His Word through the Prophets - Israel was taken captive to Assyria(2 Kings 17:6,18,23). The Majority of those people were scattered among the nations (Hosea 8:8, Jeremiah 31:10).  Judah was more obedient than Israel at first; but eventually they also turned to their own ways, rejected Gods Word and ignored His repeated attempts to get their attention through the prophets.  God gave them over to King Nebuchadnezzar who conquered them, and took them into 70 years of exile. (Daniel 1:1-2). When 70 yrs was up, God raised up King Cyrus and brought them back into Jerusalem.  (Jeremiah 29:10, Ezra 2:1, Nehemiah 7:6). The people referred to as Jews today, are mostly descendants of Judah.  The people of Israel have largely been dispersed among other nations as prophecy states.  Many of these descendants continue to worship their own gods, and their own flesh (Deuteronomy 28:64, Nehemiah 1:8-9, Ezekiel 12:15).

These things have all happened… evidence of Gods faithfulness to fulfill the prophecy we’ve been given in His Word.  So… we can trust that He will bring back these people from the ends of the Earth. That’s His promise!  It will happen.

What’s it mean for us?  Simple, none of us are so far gone that we cannot be reconciled to God through the Grace of God through Jesus.  His Grace is ENOUGH!  His discipline, our struggles, are meant to draw us to Him (Hebrews 12:4-11).  Repent and turn to God (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 1:12-13). He waits with open arms - remember the story of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15:11-32?

Love you all!  Dig
