Jeremiah 28

Good Morning “Approved Workmen”.  Today we are in Jeremiah 28.

Yesterday we saw that God purposed to give Judah an opportunity to learn that living / serving under the “yoke” of an evil king wasn’t the way to go.  We cannot serve two masters.  I mentioned that passages such as these give context to Jesus’ Words in Matt 11.  His Words would have hit home to the rebellious, unrepentant people he was speaking to.  His Words would have reminded them of Jeremiah and Judahs 70 years of Babylonian exile.  Sin and evil promise nothing but death… while the Lord, was offering them something different.  Go it alone, or go it with Jesus.  Jesus promises to take our burdens, our sin upon Himself and instead give rest.  His “yoke” is light.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭28‬-‭30‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Through Jesus, even in the midst of anxiousness we can find peace (Philippians 4:6-7).  There is no peace apart from The Lord.  Those that purpose to “go it alone” eventually realize that.

Today’s chapter introduces us to the false prophet Hananiah.  Remember Gods clear Word through Jeremiah?  Simply put, God has just told them that because of their continual rejection of His Word, and their unrepentant rebellion, they were about to experience judgment.  70 years to be exact.  The purpose was always to turn them back to Him.  He would eventually restore them.  While Judah is still considering Gods Word through Jeremiah… here comes this guy, like a hero - a savior.  Never mind what Jeremiah says… GOD’S TOLD ME… I’ll bring you back in 2 years.

Check out Hananiah’s words:
“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles of the Lord’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and took to Babylon.” Jeremiah‬ ‭28‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Hananiah turns the people’s hearts with his lies, check out Gods response…

“Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This very year you are going to die, because you have preached rebellion against the Lord.’ ” In the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.” Jeremiah‬ ‭28‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Yet another example of why we must correctly handle The Word of God (2 Timothy 2:15).  He’s not big on anyone twisting, changing, or watering it down.

Love you all!  Dig in!
