Good Morning “Humble Repenters.” Today we are in Isaiah 58.
Would you say you are a pretty humble person… or do you struggle with pride?
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”
James 4:10 NIV
“if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV
Humility seems to be a big deal in Gods economy. In fact humility is key to us learning, growing, and being blessed of The Lord. In fact, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.””
James 4:6 NIV
“That’s me… I’m humble!” Before we are so quick to answer consider this…
Perhaps the greatest demonstration of humility is a willingness to turn from our sin, and toward God. Saying no to our flesh and its desires, and recognizing that Gods way is so much better requires humility. “I DON’T have it all figured out!” “I AM clueless.” “I AM nothing without you LORD!” “I NEED You.” Get it?
In this chapter God through Isaiah is addressing Israel’s lack of REAL heart level worship. They did it, but did it their way. He contrasts worship that “looks” good on the surface with worship that truly is acceptable.
“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7bNIV
“Going through the motions”, worship, is not worship. Unless the heart is transformed the worship is meaningless. Even in their fasting they did as they pleased (vs 3).
Their worship, (religion) had become a burden - a heavy yoke.
Have you found yourself feeling burdened with worship? It’s heavy, laborious, gets old and wearisome? Perhaps there is still some “I do it the way I want,” in your attitude?
Perhaps you’ve spent much time in or around Church. But are you certain that you are truly following Jesus? Many have bought into “Jesus-themed” religion / worship, clinging to a form of godliness, but denying its power. (2 Timothy 3:1-5) Regarding those, Jesus will say, “Away from Me, I never knew you!” (Matthew 7:22-23)
Jesus promises a much better way. Let go of “your way”, humble yourself even as Jesus Himself is humble, and give it all to Him. Check out Matthew 11:28-30.
Love you all! Dig in!
