Good Morning “One of Three.” Today we are in Ecclesiastes 4.
When you see someone experiencing homelessness do you ever wonder… “Where their family is? Where are their friends.” How does one get to the point where they find themselves on the street. When I’ve stopped to talk to them, one thing is usually constant… burnt bridges.
Years ago one of our Sr High Mission trips took us to Skid Row Los Angeles. Yup it’s a real place. Skid row is a 50 sq block area in LA populated by nearly 4000 homeless. Mostly males. Some have mental illness and many are addicts. Not all however…
Working through the Union Rescue Mission we met many with different story’s. Stories of a snowball rolling out of control that ultimately crashed them there.
One young mom’s story still sticks with me today. She had two beautiful little girls, was married and pursuing her nursing degree. She had chosen a very abusive selfish husband against the urging of her parents and all her friends. He dominated her life. They moved away from. - and severed all her former relationships. One day he emptied their accounts and left. She thought if only she could finish her studies and get her degree she would be able to care for her girls. Soon she couldn’t make her mortgage payment on their house… it was foreclosed on and she was evicted. They found themselves living out of the family car… all the while she still pursued her degree. All she made from a part time job went to pay for her school and provide for her girls. Ultimately her car got repossessed, as she could not make the payment. Boom… her and her two girls were homeless on the streets of LA.
God has blessed us with each other. Many desire popularity. “He or she has SO many friends.” But, do they? “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24 NIV
When I think of inseparable supportive, “I would die for you” (John 15:13) friendships I think of David and Jonathan (1 Samuel 18-20, 2 Samuel 1-9). I think of my wife. I hope we all think of Jesus (Roman’s 5:7-8).
No matter the trials you face, think of the strength you have facing them with just one close friend… or someday perhaps a Godly husband or wife. That’s a force, sure… but now make Jesus the center! Now THAT’S a force that can endure!
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of THREE strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12 NIV
Love you all! Dig in!
