Good Morning “Commitment Keepers.” Today we are in Ecclesiastes 5.
Integrity, honor, keeping one’s word are in short supply these days. When someone gives their word, almost come to expect they will break it. Isn’t that sad?
One may expect that from an unbeliever but as Christians we should purpose for better.
“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1
People may come to expect it, but God is different. His standard of righteousness remains despite the world’s conforming. His expectation is that we conform to the likeness of Jesus (Romans 8:29).
Jesus made it perfectly clear… in fact referring to the Principle we receive from passages such as the one we are in today.
“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.” Matthew 5:33
Here Solomon reminds us of the same:
“Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.”
Ecclesiastes 5:2 NIV
“It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.”
Ecclesiastes 5:5 NIV
We must be careful of the vows to God and even promises we make to others. Remember we are His ambassadors, we represent Christ…and He never breaks His Word. Once made… we ought to drag ourselves bleeding if that’s what it takes in order to fulfill them (Hebrews 12:4). That’s what Jesus did.
Love you all! Dig in!
