Good Morning “Understanders That God is Sovereign”. Today we are in Isaiah 38.
For the sake of kind of getting our bearings… Most scholars understand chapters 38 and 39 to have occurred before 36 and 37.
Isaiah 38 parallels 2 Kings 20. Hezekiah is gonna die. On the surface it seems like soon. It may seem like God changes His mind and gives Hezekiah 15 more years - in response to his fervent repentant prayer. Umm - God is UNCHANGEABLE / immutable (fancy theological term). THAT we KNOW is True. We can speculate all kinds of reasons for why things unfolded the way they did. We know that when God brings a Word through the Prophets it’s always intended to illicit a response. Often because humble repentance is needed.
We know God will always protect “The Line of David”, Jesus’ line. Prior to Hezekiah’s life extension, he had no son. The Line would have ended with Hezekiah. Except, we know it couldn’t have, wouldn’t have, or Prophecy, Scripture wouldn’t have been fulfilled, and we would have no Savior.
Remember, God works in, around and through our doubts, our sin, our prayers. But He is ALWAYS sovereign (in control). He does NOT contradict Himself or His Word.
What of Hezekiah’s foolishness in showing off all of the treasuries of the Kingdom to Babylon… further inciting Babylon’s attack? What of the birth of Hezekiah’s son Manasseh, one of Israel’s most evil kings? Are those part of Gods plan too… YES, somehow, YES.
How do all the pieces fit together… hmmmm? As I said when we discussed this story in 2 Kings 20, maybe standing with our mouths open in awe of His incredible power is enough. Perhaps THAT’S the point! Trust, Worship, Praise Him and Give Him Glory! He’s Worthy! And He’s Sovereign!
Love you all! Dig in
